George Takes Command

Sorry this is a little late, but I wanted to post these pics. Geo took command of a company on Jan. 8. It was a short ceremony, but I was very proud of him.

My favorite picture of the ceremony. It is a picture of George saluting the company 1SG.

George and his unit.

Passing of the guidon.

THE PASSING OF THE GUIDON IS A TIME HONORED TRADITION SIGNIFYING THE RESPONSIBILITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMMAND. IN THIS CEREMONY, THE COMPANY 1SG REPRESENTING THE BACKBONE OF THE COMPANY HANDS THE GUIDON TO THE BATTALION CSM. THE BATTALION CSM THEN PASSES THE GUIDON TO THE BATTALION COMMANDER SIGNIFYING THE RETURN OF THE RESPONSIBILITY. THE BATTALION COMMANDER THEN PASSES THE GUIDON TO THE NEW COMPANY COMMANDER, THUS DEMONSTRATING HIS CONFIDENCE IN THE COMMANDER’S ABILITY TO HANDLE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF COMMAND AND MAINTAIN OR BETTER THE UNIT WHICH IS DISCIPLINED AND TRAINED IN THE BASICS OF SOLDIERING. THE COMPANY COMMANDER THEN PASSES THE GUIDON TO THE COMPANY 1SG SIGNIFYING HIS TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN THE LEADERS AND SOLDIERS OF THE COMPANY.

Historically, the flag or colors of a unit served as the point around which the Soldiers of the organization rallied as they moved forward into battle. The colors have traditionally been at the side of the commander and were carried forward even when the commander fell in combat. All others may perish, but the colors live on.

A very proud moment for you both! George looks very capable of handling this new responsibility. Thank you for the explanation of the ceremony. (I used to attend them eons ago and never knew quite what was going on. Now I would appreciate it far more than I did then.)

Michelle,
God bless George in his new command - and may He bless the soldiers under George's command as well - that they will all serve in safety and in appreciation of the new leader they have.
What a wonderful and proud moment it must have been for you.
Waiting patiently for Jamie.
Hugs my friend,
Sue
